What is IADC?

IADC stands for the International Association of Drilling Contractors. In the context of drilling tools, “IADC” most commonly refers to the IADC bit classification system — a standardized coding system used to classify and compare drill bits, especially roller cone (tricone) bits, and later adapted for fixed cutter (PDC) bits as well.

IADC Roller Cone Bit Classification

This is a 4-character code (3 numbers + 1 letter historically, though modern versions add more characters) that describes a tricone bit’s design and application:

1st digit (1–8): Cutting structure series

  • 1–3 = Steel tooth (milled tooth) bits, for soft, medium, and hard formations respectively
  • 4–8 = Insert (tungsten carbide button) bits, for increasingly harder/more abrasive formations

2nd digit (1–4): Sub-classification within the series

  • Indicates formation hardness within that series (softer to harder)

3rd digit (1–7): Bearing/gauge type

  • 1–2 = Standard roller bearing (non-sealed / sealed)
  • 3–4 = Sealed roller bearing variations
  • 5–7 = Sealed friction (journal) bearing, with 7 being sealed friction bearing with gauge protection

4th character (letter, optional features)

  • A = Air application
  • C = Center jet
  • D = Deviation control
  • E = Extended nozzle
  • G = Extra gauge/body protection
  • J = Jet deflection
  • S = Standard steel tooth
  • T = Two-cone bit
  • X, Y, Z = Gauge/chisel/conical inserts
  • (and several others for specific features)

Example: An IADC code of 537 would mean: series 5 (mild steel-tooth-equivalent insert bit for soft-medium formations), sub-class 3, sealed friction bearing.

IADC Fixed Cutter (PDC) Bit Classification

A separate, similar 4-character system exists for PDC bits, covering:

  1. Cutter type/density (dominant cutter type)
  2. Bit profile (shape)
  3. Hydraulic design (flow/nozzle configuration)
  4. Steering/directional capability

Why It Matters

The IADC code helps drilling engineers and rig operators quickly compare bits across manufacturers (Smith, Baker Hughes, Varel, ReedHycalog, etc.) on an apples-to-apples basis, since each maker’s proprietary model names don’t tell you formation suitability or bearing type at a glance.
