WHAT ARE DTH ROCK DRILLING TOOLS?
DTH (Down-The-Hole) rock drilling tools are the drilling components used in a percussion drilling method where the hammer itself travels down inside the borehole, right behind the bit — as opposed to top hammer drilling, where the percussion drill (drifter) stays at the top of the hole and hammers down through a string of rods.
How DTH drilling works?
Compressed air (or sometimes air/water/foam mixtures) is fed down the drill pipe to power a piston inside the DTH hammer. That piston strikes the bit directly, blow for blow, with almost no energy lost to friction or rod-joint flex — because the hammer is right next to the bit at the bottom of the hole. The same air also flushes cuttings back up the annulus to the surface.
Main DTH tool components
- DTH hammer – The percussion unit itself, containing the piston, cylinder, chuck, and check valve/foot valve that controls air distribution. Common brands/series include Epiroc COP/QL series, Sandvik DHD/QL series, Mincon MQ series, and SPM/Halco hammers, sized by diameter class (e.g., 3″, 4″, 5″, 6″, 8″). Also, by air pressure, DTH hammers can be classified into: mid-high air press hammers, and low air press hammers. CIR series is typical low air press hammers.
- DTH bit – The button bit that attaches to the bottom of the hammer, matched to a specific hammer model/shank type. Comes in different face designs (flat-face, drop-center, convex) and button patterns depending on rock type.
- Drill pipe / DTH drill rods – Heavier-walled rods than top hammer rods (since they don’t transmit percussion, only rotation, feed force, and air), typically threaded with API or proprietary threads.
- Adapters-Box-Box,Box-Pin,Pin-Pin to meet specific thread change needs.
Why DTH is used?
- Maintains full percussion energy regardless of hole depth (since the hammer doesn’t lose energy through long rod strings the way top hammer does).
- Produces straighter, more accurate holes over long depths.
- Preferred for larger-diameter, deeper holes — water well drilling, blast hole drilling in quarries/mining, foundation/piling work, and geothermal drilling.
- Top hammer, by contrast, is generally faster and more economical for smaller-diameter, shallower holes (typical in underground development and smaller surface benches).
